The lights dim, the crowd hushes, and with a flourish, President Trump takes the stage for his State of the Union address. By the time the evening wraps up, viewers are treated to a splash of patriotism, complete with Medal of Honor recipients and inspiring tales of American bravery. But while the majority watched in rapt attention, loving every moment, CNN discovered that a significant chunk of viewers were dealing with a case of Trump Derangement Syndrome so severe they could mistake the Oval Office for a circus ring.
Meanwhile, the Democrats in attendance seemed to be having quite a different kind of soirée. In some parallel universe—one only accessible via good old-fashioned channel flipping—they hosted what can best be described as the great frog fiasco. The highlight? Some expressive theatre that featured dancing frogs and a brigade from Portland. No, this isn’t a scene from a Saturday morning cartoon, though it sure feels like it. To them, this was their valiant stand against what they dubbed as an authoritarian project. Clearly, they missed the memo that such theatrics might not win hearts—or elections.
Enter John Fetterman, casting a wary eye over the spectacle. Now, if even Fetterman, who has been known to have his own share of challenges, is raising an eyebrow, that should tell you something about the night’s absurdity. One might think that dressing up as amphibians and prancing around would be a no-go for a party attempting to project seriousness—yet, here we are. Batty as ever, the Democrats continue to baffle, proving once more why their approval ratings are tanking like a lead balloon.
But perhaps the pièce de résistance was when the Democrats opted for their Spanish version of the State of the Union response. Complete with English subtitles, it was as if even they weren’t confident their audience would follow along. With lackluster views and an even less enthusiastic number of shares, it seemed their plan to “whip up” enthusiasm had all the impact of a feather duster on a brick wall. Meanwhile, the loyal foot soldiers of the party gave their all, trying to rally the troops, but facts (or frogs) were hard to swallow.
In the grand finale, against the backdrop of unbridled theatrical nonsense, a young Trump supporter stormed the stage, and perhaps unintentionally, stole the spotlight. With cries of “Go Trump!” he solidified that no amount of froggy lamenting or chaotic applause could distract from the stark reality that sometimes, just sometimes, simplicity trumps spectacle.
So, as the circus tent folds down, one has to wonder what the next act will bring. Democrats may come from a long line of theatrical kids, but with antics like this, they better hope the audience doesn’t beat them to the exit.
