The planned operations, according to reporting, would bring in strike teams of ICE agents to address longstanding concerns about compliance with immigration orders.
The reaction on the ground has been immediate: local residents describe a climate of fear, businesses in Somali neighborhoods temporarily closing, and families worried about being swept up in broad enforcement actions. Journalists who visited Minneapolis reported that even lawful residents are carrying documentation more often and that community leaders are scrambling to reassure people while demanding due process.
Supporters of the enforcement point to a string of fraud and abuse cases exposed in recent years that critics say were ignored by local officials and the national media until conservatives raised the alarm.
