Trump’s Mercantilism Outshines Globalism, Says Victor Davis Hanson

The political arena is buzzing with concerns over the growing U.S. debt and the looming threat of a budget deficit that seems set to take a permanent residence in the nation’s financial books. Recent discussions have shone a light on the Republicans’ struggle, especially with factions in their own party unwilling to back spending cuts. As the nation grapples with a staggering $37 trillion debt and a daunting $2 trillion budget deficit, many are scratching their heads and wondering what the plan is to turn this ship around.

Senator Joni Ernst stands out among those who are resistant to considering cuts, particularly to essential programs like Medicaid. She argues that reducing these programs would inflict hardship on rural voters, many of whom reside in red states that form the backbone of Republican support. Meanwhile, the mood in Washington is anything but optimistic, with many arguing that maintaining the current trajectory—essentially the Democratic way—is tantamount to speeding down a road that leads straight into a fiscal canyon. The once-unfathomable reality of a credit downgrade from Moody’s is now upon us, highlighting just how serious the situation has become.

In the midst of economic turmoil, an entirely different battle is heating up in the courts, as Harvard University finds itself in the crosshairs of a lawsuit initiated by the Trump administration. The heart of the dispute centers around the university’s practice of admitting an increasing number of foreign students—some of whom have been accused of harboring unpatriotic sentiments. Whether or not these students truly represent a threat to American values is a matter of heated debate, yet the university’s reluctance to cooperate with the government in providing transparency around their admissions practices isn’t doing them any favors.

The Trump administration’s move to hold elite institutions accountable speaks to a broader concern that resonates with many: if universities wish to benefit from federal funds, they should adhere to federal regulations. Many of these institutions have faced scrutiny over their practices around admissions, anti-Semitic incidents, and their commitment to upholding the First Amendment. Some Republicans believe that Harvard and similar universities should choose between accepting taxpayer money or maintaining their current practices without oversight. This ultimatum could lead to a shifting dynamic in how higher education is funded in the future.

On a different front, discussions surrounding foreign policy are also heating up. Championing a more pragmatic, profit-focused approach to international relations, proponents of the “Trump Doctrine” argue that establishing mercantile relationships can lead to more stable and peaceful outcomes compared to traditional military interventions. The thinking is that when countries are invested in mutual prosperity, they are less likely to engage in conflicts. This view directly challenges the idealism that often drives foreign policy decisions, particularly interventions that haven’t yielded positive results over the last few decades.

The underlying sentiment is clear: as the nation grapples with economic challenges and faces divisive political battles, the call for practical solutions echoes louder than ever. With lawmakers divided and the financial responsibility of the government hanging in the balance, it remains to be seen what steps will be taken next. All eyes will be on Congress, where the push and pull of Democrat and Republican ideologies will undoubtedly continue to shape the landscape, and potentially the future, of America’s fiscal health.
