Trump’s Plea Falls Flat as Oil Prices Soar Over $103

In a bold move that echoes the age-old saying “If you want something done right, do it yourself,” President Donald Trump is shaking things up in the world of international oil trade. With oil prices on the rise—creeping up to $15.90 a barrel for global benchmark Brent crude and a hefty $97.43 for West Texas Intermediate—he’s taken a stand requesting that U.S. allies step up to the plate and help protect the crucial Strait of Hormuz. After all, the strait is a major artery that carries around 20% of the world’s oil supply.

Trump pointed out an interesting fact: while the U.S. mainly relies on its own bountiful oil reserves, many of its allies are not quite so self-sufficient. In conversations aboard Air Force One, he firmly stated that these nations should pitch in to safeguard the strait since they benefit from the oil flowing through it. In his view, it’s high time for these countries to take their turn in keeping the waters safe for commercial shipping. According to the president, “It’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there.”

But that’s not all. The president’s proposal is also laced with a warning regarding NATO’s future if these allies respond poorly to his requests. Although he didn’t name specific countries, he hinted that nations like China, which snags about 90% of its oil from the Strait of Hormuz, ought to be part of this maritime security effort. It’s clear that Trump isn’t afraid to throw down the gauntlet. He’s contemplating whether to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month, based on China’s willingness to cooperate in fortifying oil transport in the region.

Now, while Iran continues to make threats against oil infrastructure and has reportedly been trying to impose a blockade on the strait, it seems they’ve managed to get a few barrels through to China despite the tensions. The irony isn’t lost here; while Iran poses threats, it’s also making deals. In fact, reports suggest that over 10 million barrels have already made their way to the Asian giant through this critical waterway.

As oil prices climb higher than a kid on a carnival ferris wheel, it’s only natural for leaders around the world to take note. If Trump plays his cards right, he could catalyze an interesting shift in alliances and perhaps make oil trade in the Middle East even more intriguing than an action movie plot. So, whether or not those allied nations heed the call remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: the stakes are high, and the world is watching.
