In today’s world of news, where drama and fabrication often masquerade as fact, it seems some folks will do anything to spin a story that suits their agenda. Take, for instance, this recent headline where NBC News, known for its flair in sensationalism, claimed that immigration enforcement had detained a five-year-old autistic girl. They suggested it was part of a devious plan to get to the girl’s father. As it turns out, this was a complete fabrication, cooked up by the network with perhaps the worst reputation for fake news. Yes, NBC seems to be striving hard to win the dubious title of “Most Misleading.”
What is the result of spreading such false stories? Nothing short of chaos and confusion. Our dedicated law enforcement officers become unfairly villainized while trying to perform their duties. Crafting tales of cruelty against innocent children does nothing but stir public outrage and distrust. It’s a dangerous game to play, one that bolsters division and incites unwarranted violence against those who wear the badge—the very individuals tasked with upholding our laws.
As if this was not enough, Democratic politicians seem to add fuel to the fire by promoting actions that sound more like they belong in an action movie than in real life. When elected officials encourage doxing, or publicizing private information about ICE officers, it crosses a line. Do they not realize the dangerous precedent they are setting? Such actions put officers and their families at risk, all because of a misguided attempt to smear those who are simply doing their job.
Adding to this unsettling picture, there are mayors, such as the one in Los Angeles, who spur protesters to confront our law enforcement. This encouragement of hostility is beyond irresponsible. We should be seeking to support, not sabotage, the efforts of those on the front line of our communities. This “get in their face” approach does nothing to address grievances constructively and only fans the flames of division and violence.
Political violence is an ugly stain on our society that seems to be spreading. Combating it requires swift condemnation and also a reversal of the incendiary rhetoric coming from the top echelons of the Democratic party. We need leaders who will promote unity and respect, not those who deepen the rifts with fanciful fictions and divisive politics. To allow this narrative to continue unchecked is to watch the fabric of our society unravel, and that’s a consequence none of us can afford.
