Wealthy Liberals Mocked for ‘Saving’ Cuba’s Communism

In the world of social media stardom and progressive idealism, there seems to be a growing trend: influencers taking their privilege on holiday to places where socialism is more than just a catchy slogan on a T-shirt. Take, for instance, the recent escapade of some well-known left-wing influencers who found themselves enjoying the sunny splendors of Cuba, from the comfort of a five-star hotel, no less. Not just any hotel, mind you, but reportedly staying in luxurious accommodations amidst a nationwide blackout. Now that’s what you call experiential learning—or perhaps, it’s just another episode of “Do As I Say, Not As I Do.”

This latest saga by our globe-trotting social justice warriors highlights the stark contrast between reality and rhetoric. While the Cuban people are wrestling with real hardships—constant blackouts and scarcity—these visitors lounge in luxury, sipping their ethically questionable imported espresso. With Cartier sunglasses perched on their noses, it’s hard to imagine that they’re truly in tune with the everyday struggles of the average Cuban citizen. It seems that when it comes to embracing the spirit of socialism, it’s all good as long as everyone’s favorite hotel room accessory, electricity, comes along for the ride.

The irony runs even deeper with some of these influencers, who are reportedly staying in accommodations that the U.S. State Department advises against. It’s quite the adventure, skirting the rules, especially when it might mean a hefty fine upon their airport stroll back onto American soil. But such is the price, they’d likely argue, of solidarity and shared suffering—a sentiment that’s just a touch more palatable when you’re surrounded by the gleam of five-star opulence.

And let’s talk about the narrative. These influencers often paint these trips as eye-opening, a chance to witness resilience first-hand. There’s plenty of talk about how the Cuban people make the most out of their limited resources—a cultural admiration captured on countless smartphone videos. Yet, when the cameras turn off, or the influencers retreat to air-conditioned luxury, there’s a loud silence about the role their lavish lifestyle might play in the bleak picture outside their picture-perfect hotel windows.

What truly stands out, perhaps beyond the glitzy irony, is the image of a tour bus full of visitors recording the streets of Havana like it’s an exotic safari. Through their lens, it’s a world crying for change—yet, for all their passion for revolution, that change seems only to come with conditions that include first-class comfort and five-star accommodations. It’s a lesson in contradictions, really—a study in how the broken promises of socialism are easier to ignore when you’ve got a return flight to capitalism booked and waiting.
