There seems to be a new sheriff in town, and he’s making quite the entrance in Washington, D.C. The President rolled into the nation’s capital with quite the entourage of National Guard and law enforcement officers. Not only did he bring along scores of troops, but he also carried pizza and burgers to reward them for their hard work. In doing so, he showed them that he means business when it comes to securing the safety of the country’s citizens, at least those in D.C. to start.
For those concerned about the state of the city, the President’s visit seemed like a godsend. He promised a complete makeover for Washington, D.C., and not just in terms of safety. According to the President, in six months, the city will boast new surfaces, medians, and more beautiful surroundings. Perhaps he’s considering adding a few gold doorknobs and marble columns too. After all, his vision for a “maxed out” capital sounds like something out of an HGTV show.
However, not everyone is applauding the move. Critics have come out, calling the intervention heavy-handed and expressing concerns about the intensified immigration enforcement. There are murmurs of federal overreach and fears of unwelcome presence on the streets. But, if one’s safety is in question, maybe a little discomfort is the least of their worries.
Old habits die hard, and the city’s current Mayor is sticking to her guns. She points out that crime was already on the decline before the President’s patrol, suggesting that his numbers might be more puffery than fact. The President, however, dismisses these claims as false, sticking to his guns with a certainty that only he can project. Accuracy? Who needs it when you have conviction?
The left, as always, seems to have a bone to pick. Amid cries of “fascism” from critics who might not even know what that word means, there’s a reflexive opposition to whatever the President does. The idea seems to be that if the President is for it, they must be against it. It’s a knee-jerk reaction that brings into question the entire left-wing perspective on crime and policing. But the President seems unfazed, promising continued safety improvements. With him at the helm, it remains to be seen just how perfect the capital will become. Only time will tell if D.C.’s transformation is for better or for show.
