Why These 3 Movies Are a Hard Pass for This Year

As the holiday movie season approaches, film enthusiasts and casual viewers alike often find themselves excited for the latest cinematic offerings. However, not every film deserves that excitement, and some could redefine the concept of the letdown. Three upcoming films have raised eyebrows and prompted skepticism among conservatives who take a closer look at their thematic content and underlying messages.

First on the list is “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.” The sequel to the franchise that started with “Knives Out,” it has a sturdy ensemble cast, but that hardly guarantees a satisfying experience. The first film was an intriguing detective story, but the follow-up, “Glass Onion,” left many feeling cheated. A mystery should engage the audience, allowing them to piece together the clues and arrive at conclusions themselves. Instead, the second installment took a turn that many would rightfully label a “giant cheat,” throwing a twist at the audience that was not only unexpected but also unearned. As the trailer for the new film plays out, one can’t help but wonder if it will continue this trend of misdirection, particularly given its potential anti-religious undertones. It appears to be an uphill battle to trust Ryan Johnson with the narrative again.

Next up, “Weathering Heights” appears to be an attempt at adapting a classic novel but risks turning it into a spectacle centered on modern tropes that feel more like a music video than a timeless story about love and despair. The shifts from historical depth to modern-day distractions—such as questionable visuals and bizarre music choices—are not only jarring but also disrespectful to the source material. How can a story that explores deep emotional struggles and class differences be successfully told when it is accompanied by what seems like theatrical fluff? Hollywood’s penchant for remaking literature into visually appealing yet shallow entertainment often leaves audiences longing for authenticity. If filmmakers could focus more on the narrative and less on flashy gimmicks, they might just capture the depth that resonates with viewers.

Finally, “Avatar 9000: Fire and Ash,” the latest installment in the endlessly expanding Avatar universe, raises the question of whether audiences have finally reached “CGI fatigue.” After two films that over-promised on visual feats and under-delivered on storytelling substance, what’s left for viewers to latch on to? The bright neon images and impressive graphics might have dazzled audiences a decade ago, but the novelty is wearing thin. People yearn for compelling narratives just as much—if not more—than they desire visual spectacles. The frantic overuse of CGI seems to detract from the heart of filmmaking, which should be centered on character depth and storytelling, not just eye candy.

The common thread among these three films is a departure from the fundamental elements of good filmmaking—engaging storytelling and a respect for source material. When these elements take a back seat to flashy visuals, modern themes, and oftentimes propaganda, the film experience can leave audiences feeling empty. In a world where filmmakers have the power to inspire, educate, and entertain, it is imperative they resist the lure of cheats, gimmicks, and sensationalism. As nostalgia for classic cinema grows louder, perhaps Hollywood should revisit what made those films enduring: captivating stories and genuine connections to audiences. For now, filmgoers may be better off saving their money and waiting for something that truly delivers.
