Woke Schools Finally Nail One Important Lesson

The latest move from the San Francisco public school district should make every American scratch their heads in disbelief. This new grading policy sounds more like a recipe for disaster than an innovative approach to education. Imagine this: students can graduate with a score as low as 21%. That’s right, just 21% is now considered a passing grade. We could say it’s an imaginative take on education if only it weren’t so ridiculous. This approach effectively ensures that students will pass their classes with barely a hint of commitment or effort.

Under this grading for “equity” method, the idea of homework, once a cornerstone of academic rigor, has been thrown out the window. Students will no longer have to worry about completing assignments on time, or at all, since homework and weekly test scores won’t influence final grades. The classroom becomes more of a revolving door for students who are now free to come and go as they please. Skipping class? No problem. This policy suggests that simply showing up now and then is good enough to stroll across the graduation stage.

Apparently, success in San Francisco’s schools is now based on one exam at the end of each semester. Conveniently, this exam can be retaken multiple times. It begs the question, what sort of message does this send to our youth? Of course, there’s always a silver lining in the world of progressive policies, sometimes one has to squint to see it. The elimination of homework, for instance, can be applauded for returning some family time back to parents. However, it’s clear the school board’s intentions likely differ from those who value quality family time over intrusive educational practices.

The fact that an A is achievable with just 80% brings to light another concern. Back in the good old days, an A was a mark of excellence, an indicator of hard work and understanding. Now, it seems like we’re handing out As for mediocrity. And 21% for a passing grade? That’s like saying you barely have a pulse, but you’re still invited to the party. This pitiful standard not only cheats students out of a real education but also dilutes the achievements of those who strive for academic excellence.

In the end, this is more than just a peculiar policy choice; it’s a reflection of a broader cultural shift that values mediocrity over merit. When the bar is set so low, it drags everyone down with it. Our education system needs an overhaul, but not by lowering standards and expectations. Instead, we should be uplifting our students, encouraging diligence, responsibility, and the pursuit of knowledge. Anything less is a disservice to our children and to the future of our country.
