Ah, the first week of January! For most, it’s a time to focus on resolutions and the promise of a fresh start. But for Democrats, it seems to mark their yearly ritual of momentarily pretending to support federal law enforcement. The political theater on January 6 is a sight to behold, as they dust off their badges of respect for law and order, before tossing them in the trash immediately after. It’s curious how swiftly their respect vanishes when agents move into blue states or cities to enforce the law. Suddenly, the mighty defenders of democracy are crying foul, turning the tables and labeling the very officers they lionized as villains.
Enter Minnesota, where this year’s dramatics reached a new peak. Here, the state’s leadership offered an encore performance of denunciation. The governor, Tim Walz, didn’t hold back his extravagant accusations, sketching dramatic scenes of federal officers supposedly whisking people away to unmarked vans and foreign dungeons—a narrative more fitting for a spy novel than the evening news. Such rhetoric has real consequences, and in Minneapolis, it didn’t take long for actions to follow words.
The spotlight turned to an unfortunate event involving an ICE agent and a radical left-wing activist. Despite clear instructions to exit her vehicle due to threats she made towards federal officers, this individual chose instead to hit the accelerator, aiming straight at these officers. In defense, shots were fired, resulting in tragedy. It’s obvious who was under threat here. The officer was justified, upholding the black-and-white clarity of U.S. law that protects those enforcing federal duties from attacks—an important reminder that attempting such dangerous antics, like ramming someone with a car, is a surefire way to earn a long prison sentence.
One would think in these times, liberal leaders might pause and reflect. But let’s not kid ourselves—with Minneapolis’ leadership, it seems reflection isn’t part of the playbook. Mayor Jacob Frey joined the chorus, telling ICE to take a hike, declaring their presence unwanted in his city. One must appreciate the irony—these leaders, who should champion order, are busy criticising those who uphold it, adding fuel to the fire.
Sadly, this sets the stage for what is likely to unfold—a potentially explosive situation in Minneapolis, with another “George Floyd moment” on the horizon. These fiery reactions to lawful actions are all too predictable in a city led by those who seem more interested in protecting agitators than law enforcement. So, as the curtain rises on another act of mayhem and protest, all we can do is offer our prayers for those who stand at the thin line of law and order, trying to keep the peace amidst the chaos.
