Zucker Slams Naked Gun Reboot: Hollywood’s Comedy Legacy at Risk

David Zucker, creator of The Naked Gun and Airplane!, sounded off about Hollywood’s rejection of his reboot plans. The studio opted for Seth MacFarlane’s version instead of Zucker’s pitch to spoof Mission: Impossible with Frank Drebin’s son. Paramount executives initially praised his script Naked: Impossible but later handed the project to MacFarlane, cutting Zucker out entirely. This move left the comedy legend feeling snubbed and worried about the reboot’s direction.

Zucker’s idea would’ve modernized the franchise by parodying spy films, a genre he argues is still “current” for spoofing. He stressed that modern Hollywood can’t handle slapstick comedy like his ZAZ team perfected. Instead, the new Naked Gun stars Liam Neeson, a choice Zucker blasted as miscasting. “You wouldn’t cast a serious action hero in a goofy cop comedy,” he reasoned, pointing to the original Leslie Nielsen’s perfect balance of drama and schtick.

The director compared the reboot to Airplane II, a sequel his team didn’t make. “It’s like watching your daughter become a prostitute,” he zinged, emphasizing that legacy frauds fail because they ignore the creators who made the magic. Studios seem more interested in cashing in on nostalgia than honoring classic formulas, he claimed.

Zucker also criticized the reboot’s over-reliance on CGI and slick production. “They’re replacing pratfalls with expensive green-screen tricks,” he sighed, arguing that modern comedies prioritize looks over laughs. This shift reflects broader Hollywood trends, where “liberal elites” clamp down on edgy jokes and dumb down material for politically correct audiences.

The Naked Gun reboot’s authenticity issues go deeper than casting, Zucker argued. It’s part of a pattern where studios sideline original creators for “safe” directors like MacFarlane, whose style clashes with the slapstick heritage. “They don’t understand what made these films great,” he repeated, comparing the reboot’s approach to “putting kale in a Big Mac.”

Zucker’s frustration isn’t just personal—it reflects a conservative critique of Hollywood’s decline. By rejecting the voices behind iconic comedies, studios prove they’re more invested in agendas than audience entertainment. This elitism explains why recent parodies feel forced and disconnected from the culture they supposedly mock.

The reboot’s failure to involve Zucker raises questions about how modern films treat legacy. “If Leslie Nielsen were alive, he’d reject this version too,” he asserted, calling out the industry’s short memory. True comedy thrives on raw, unapologetic jokes—not woke pandering or algorithm-driven returns.

As the reboot approaches theaters, Zucker’s warnings highlight a larger battle between authentic artistry and corporate cynicism. Whether the Naked Gun revival succeeds or flops, it won’t carry the ZAZ stamp of approval—a loss not just for comedy but for Hollywood’s soul.
