Dana Perino: Trump Fuels His Own Opposition Movement

The jury in the Lindsey Clancy murder trial in Massachusetts is as deadlocked as a family of Democrats trying to decide on a brunch place. Despite 37 hours of deliberations over six days, the jury can’t reach a unanimous verdict. It seems like one juror is digging in their heels like a stubborn mule on what “reasonable doubt” means, much to the frustration of the defense attorney, who’s probably wishing he could turn them into an alternate by sheer force of will alone. However, the judge isn’t budging. It must be something in the water up in Massachusetts because it seems like they do everything upside down, from the law to Lobster Rolls.

Meanwhile, in a burst of political energy that would make even the Energizer Bunny jealous, former President Trump is gearing up to support 35 Republican candidates in the upcoming midterm elections, much to the chagrin of Democrats everywhere. He’s promising his full support, and knowing him, he might even throw in some hairstyling tips for good measure. He’s focused on the candidates that need his help the most, unlike the President, who’d likely need a nap halfway through just picking out which speeches to give.

Talk about throwing a political curveball, Trump is heading to Dallas for a two-night GOP convention aimed at drumming up excitement ahead of November. It’s the Trump show—a full-blown festival that should give late-night comedians plenty of fodder. Democrats, on the other hand, must be thinking, “Here we go again,” as they scramble to counteract this juggernaut. Can they turn the tides in time for November, or are they going to watch this train rush by, holding their breath until they turn a shade of blue that’s more fitting for their party?

In the middle of this political circus, Republicans are working hard to distance themselves from the Trump brand even though it’s the brand that brings in the crowds—and votes. They’re now trying to sell “independent leadership,” but let’s be honest: this is a little like trying to sell kale chips to kids when all they really want are McDonald’s fries. Some Republican candidates are even stripping their websites of all things Trump faster than kids ransack their parents’ candy stash after Halloween.

And just when you thought the political landscape couldn’t get more bizarre, here comes the talk about the Democratic Socialist of America (DSA). Suddenly, Democrats are being painted as “fellow travelers” of Marxist ideology, like they’ve been taking a late-night train straight to socialism. Could this shift be the reason Democrats seem to be losing their popularity faster than a TikTok trend? It’s anyone’s guess. But rest assured, as Trump and his allies rally their base, aiming to keep hold of at least the Senate, there’s plenty more political theater ahead. Who will have the last laugh? Well, that’s the million-dollar question in this topsy-turvy political game.
