Andrew Klavan Breaks Down His Top Classic Video Games

Once upon a time, in a land where plumbers became heroes and mushrooms grew fangs, the noble art of video gaming was born. It was a time when the earth trembled as Pong’s pixelated paddle made its debut, and when spaceships lined up in neat little rows, ready to invade living rooms across America. It was the dawn of a revolution that no one expected, least of all the suits who thought excess quarters in the couch cushions had a better purpose than feeding arcade machines.

This nostalgic romp through digital playgrounds reminds one of the good ol’ days when games had a certain simplicity — or should we say elegance? Take Pong, for instance. With its two white bars and a dot pretending to be a ball, it was hailed as the pinnacle of modern technology. To the uninitiated, it seemed like two lines playing catch, but to the enlightened, it was proof that humanity had finally conquered the digital frontier. Fast forward a decade or two, and the world witnessed the birth of legends like Super Mario and Pac-Man — the gold standards by which all would be judged. Who knew that a plumber named Mario, with a mustache fit for a pizza box, would leave such an indelible mark on popular culture?

Indeed, Mario’s quest to save Princess Peach from the clutches of a very shellfish reptile was nothing short of iconic. But, let’s not forget about Pac-Man, the round, yellow hero devouring dots and ghosts like it was an ’80s buffet special. There’s a lesson there about excess, but who cares when it’s all in good fun? These games taught players the value of persistence and the dark reality of the power of arcades. Space Invaders taught everyone that repeating patterns could be both mesmerizing and destructive to one’s piggy bank.

Naturally, not every game was a home run. For every Mega Man that filled hearts with joy (or frustration, depending on one’s skill level), there were others, like the infamous Legend of Zelda, which united the masses. To some, it was a sprawling epic of discovery; to others, it was as dull as watching paint dry in an imaginary Hyrule. But let’s face it, even the noble Zelda, with all its dragons and dungeons, had its off days. And that’s perfectly fine because not every game needed to be a big hit — sometimes, just being part of the conversation was enough.

As the pixels turned to polygons and games became more lifelike, it seemed that the straightforward charm of earlier titles faded, much like a once-vibrant 8-bit soundtrack. But maybe that’s just the nostalgia talking. While new games might have plateaued, resting on the laurels of their ancestors, the magic never really disappeared for those who remember watching their first Donkey Kong barrel roll.

So, as this grand tale of digital derring-do continues, one can only hope for the next leap in technology. A world where the phrase “it’s just a game” is met with respectful correction as one embarks on new quests that await in the fresh pixelated horizons. Until then, there’s nothing wrong with reminiscing about the days when heroes wore overalls and the biggest decision was whether to jump on or over the Goomba. Who knows what new adventures await, but one thing’s for sure: the pixelated past will always be a cherished chapter in the grand saga of entertainment.
