Over in Maine, a storm’s brewing, and it has nothing to do with the weather. The focus is squarely on Gram Platter, an accused rapist and self-proclaimed socialist, who’s refusing to bow out of the state’s Senate race. Even with nearly everyone from the Democratic establishment, including Bernie Sanders, urging him to step aside, Platter’s got his own plans. It seems he fancies himself as kingmaker, wanting to personally handpick his successor. One might wonder if there’s a shortage of mirrors in his house, because otherwise, it’s hard to see how he keeps a straight face.
Meanwhile, Republicans are having none of it and can’t help but gloat at the Democrats’ predicament. Take Louisiana Senator John Kennedy, for example, who’s known for his colorful expressions. He noted that Platter’s nomination was courtesy of what he calls the “Hamas wing” of the Democratic Party, accused of pushing an extreme left agenda. According to Kennedy, Platter’s political acumen is as short-circuited as an outdated motherboard, and recognizing his dubious character takes about as much common sense as knowing a toaster shouldn’t smoke.
In Maine, Senator Susan Collins is probably sitting back with a cup of coffee, watching this debacle unfold. Having been in the U.S. Senate practically since the dawn of time—or at least since 1997—Collins isn’t exactly shaking in her boots. With her odds looking better than another sequel to a popular Disney movie, she’s seen as a reliable figure who stands firm for what she believes is best for Maine and the country.
As the Democrats scramble to sort out this mess, there’s chatter that a similar circus could emerge in Michigan with another controversial candidate, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. The narrative seems to suggest that the Democrats’ left flank is leaning so far over that they might just tip over. This leftward tilt, marked by taboo topics like defunding the police and opening borders, must make presidential portraits spin faster than a top.
In the end, there’s an old saying that says when your opponent is digging his own grave, let him keep digging. For Republicans, the fun is in letting these embattled candidates speak up. And if Democrats don’t course-correct soon, they might find themselves stuck in a plot twist worthy of a late-night comedy sketch. As the drama continues, Republican commentators are all too happy to provide the popcorn commentary, watching and waiting to see if the Democrats can pull off a miracle that won’t involve pulling a rabbit out of a hat—or in this case, a new candidate out of a top hat.
