It began with a simple, and yet disastrous, misunderstanding. General Kornilov had an understanding with Prime Minister Kerensky to restore order if chaos loomed over the city. Kerensky ducked questions years later about whether he had invited Kornilov into Petrograd, but did admit that he had been keeping within his reach ‘trusted’ formations, which included Kornilov’s troops. Lavr Kornilov allegedly representing Kerensky approached Kornilov with a hypothetical question about taking temporary control to stabilize the situation. Kornilov, who had no ambitions to rule, gave a tentative list of conditions, thinking nothing of it. Lav mischievously took this back to Kerensky as a demand for power, all but pouring fuel on a nonexistent fire.

Instead of directly communicating with his general to clear the confusion, Kerensky decided to impersonate Lav and sent vague messages to the military, trying to sniff out supposed conspiracies. The comedy of errors reached its peak when Kerensky mistakenly concluded that the jig was up and that Kornilov was marching on the capital to seize power.
