New $1 Gold Coin Debuts with Trump’s Face—Collectors Are Buzzing

In a move sure to raise eyebrows and spark conversations across the country, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant has unveiled the first images of a $1 gold coin featuring none other than former President Donald Trump. This announcement comes just weeks after the unveiling of a new $250 bill, also adorned with Trump’s face. While some may be excited about the prospect of Trump coins, others are questioning the legality of such currency, given existing laws prohibiting living individuals from appearing on American money.

The coin showing Trump’s image was recently shared on social media platform X, where Bessant also included the motto “In God We Trust” and the text “Liberty 1776 to 2026.” This initiative is part of a broader plan to commemorate a significant milestone: the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. Bessant characterized the coin not only as a tribute to Trump but as a lasting symbol of patriotism and the values that America stands for.

However, the introduction of this $1 gold coin is not without controversy. Existing legislation forbids living people from being featured on currency, a rule intended to maintain the dignity and respect associated with American money. Yet, proponents of the coin argue that it cleverly navigates around this law. The Trump administration contends that this coin is part of a special commemorative series, which allows for some flexibility in honoring American figures.

Historically, there have been several legislative attempts to modify how living presidents can be depicted on currency. In December, Democratic lawmakers put forth the Change Corruption Act, aiming to reinforce the ban on featuring sitting or living presidents on any form of U.S. currency. The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 had already opened the door to circulating coins featuring deceased presidents, leaving a potentially confusing landscape for future coinage.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on the Federal Commission of Fine Arts. Trump’s panel recently approved a special commemorative U.S. gold coin portraying him leaning on the Resolute Desk, a striking design inspired by a famous photograph now housed at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. As more details emerge about the production and distribution of these coins, they are sure to generate both enthusiasm and debate among the American public. Regardless of individual opinions about Trump, there is no denying that his face on American currency will certainly bring lots of chatter to dinner tables across the nation.
