Obama’s Policies Crush Black Construction Businesses

Once upon a time, in the ever-entertaining carnival of politics, the Obama Presidential Center emerged as a tale worth telling. Like a finely spun yarn with twists and turns that only Washington could weave, the once-promised architectural wonder has become a comedy of errors—if you don’t mind the gallows humor. In this episode, the power of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hiring meets the bricks and mortar reality of construction projects. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t good at all.

It seems our former president, in a patriotic gesture to the modern DEI movement he helped popularize, decided that the construction of his own presidential library was the perfect place to test out those ideals. Preferring virtue over merit, Obama reportedly opted for hiring minority-owned businesses for the construction. But as the foundation was laid, so were the seeds for unforeseen chaos; projects ran behind schedule, over budget, and with lawsuits aplenty.

Take the case of Adamson Plumbing and a handful of other minority contractors brought on board. Once filled with the hope of transformative economic opportunities, they’re now on the brink of collapse. The company filed a lawsuit claiming millions in unpaid dues, paving the way for financial ruin. It turns out the grand plan to foster economic growth for minority firms did the complete opposite; it left some of them grasping for financial survival.

In a pot-calling-the-kettle-black scenario, Obama was accused of racial discrimination in his hiring practices. Who would’ve thought that selecting firms based on skin shades rather than their skills would lead to such a mess? Oh, the irony is as sweet as it is bitter. But this isn’t just about construction setbacks; it’s an allegory for what happens when ideology trumps expertise.

The library itself, after gobbling up more taxpayer dollars than initially forecast, sits as a monument to modern artistic interpretation—or as locals unflatteringly describe it, a mix between a prison and a TARDIS with the aesthetics of a Soviet block. It seems the architectural design left even the critics scratching their heads about what exactly the structure is supposed to represent.

So what’s the takeaway here? While the intention of DEI was noble, relying solely on it without considering competence and experience has become its Achilles’ heel. Whether a towering monument to DEI’s pitfalls or simply the latest political boondoggle, the Obama Presidential Center reminds us all: sometimes good intentions aren’t enough to hold up a roof—or a project.
