Tesla Owner Blames Autopilot, Battles Speeding Ticket in Court

In a delightful display of modern-day technology tantrums, a man found himself in quite the pickle when he was pulled over for speeding while riding in his high-tech Tesla. The incident unfolded like a scene from a comedy sketch, as the man argued with a police officer about his role, or lack thereof, as the driver of the notoriously self-driving vehicle. It’s a curious tale that perfectly encapsulates the blend of modern technology and the age-old facepalm moments humans never seem to outgrow.

As the dialog between the officer and the man unfolded, one couldn’t help but imagine a courtroom drama where the car itself takes the stand to testify. After all, the man, seated comfortably in the driver’s seat, adamantly claimed that he wasn’t really driving. In his mind, the autopilot was taking care of all the pesky little details, like following speed limits. The officer, however, was less than impressed by the blame-shifting strategy. He politely reminded the man that, unlike his futuristic vehicle, the world of law and order hasn’t quite embraced the robots yet.

The officer, maintaining his composure, informed the man that he needed to see his driver’s license. The ticket was for cruising at 64 in a 45 mph zone – a speed that seemed wholly autonomous and blissfully unaware of its surroundings. Clearly, the car’s creators hadn’t accounted for the all-seeing, all-knowing traffic laws. As the automatic machine with wheels silently basked in its own electro-intelligence, the officer patiently explained that legally, the person physically occupying the driver’s seat was still responsible.

Despite the man’s repeated requests for a supervisor, the officer assured him that calling for reinforcements wouldn’t change the situation. The man was handed a ticket, along with the friendly advice that trust in artificial intelligence might not hold up so well at traffic court. It turns out that as convenient as autopilot may be, it still doesn’t come with a special “get out of jail free” card.

As the motorist drove away—hopefully at a more appropriate speed—the incident served as a humorous reminder of where society stands in its journey from old-fashioned driving to a Jetsons-style future. Until then, one might recommend that Tesla enthusiasts keep one eye on the road and the other on their insurance premiums. After all, it seems their sleek, smart cars have some learning to do before they can fully handle the rules of the road.
