Trump Steals the Spotlight at Knicks Game

It seems like no public outing involving Trump is ever simple. This time, he found himself smack dab in the middle of Madison Square Garden, taking in a Knicks game with quite the entourage. Regally perched alongside New York Knicks owner James Dolan, Trump’s appearance under the bright lights was played out like a scene from a TV drama. It might come as a surprise to some that Dolan extended an invite to Trump, but their connection through Mar-a-Lago probably makes it a no-brainer. For Trump, used to being in the public eye and occasionally enjoying the company of a few jeers, this was just another evening out.

Joining the former president were a few familiar faces, making up what might be considered the “Trump faithful.” Sean Duffy and Doug Burgum, recognizable as former secretaries, were part of the Trump camp. Completing the picture were family members, like his granddaughter Kai Trump, and some not-so-family-business associate in-law Jared Kushner. Also present was real estate developer Steve Witkoff, among others. It was essentially an all-star cast of Trump’s nearest and dearest that likely turned heads far more effectively than a fast break on the court.

It’s no secret that Trump has an uncanny ability to evoke strong reactions from crowds, and this night was certainly no exception. As the cameras found their way to him, the arena erupted in a mixed bag of reactions—a symphony composed of both boos and cheers. For Trump, who is media savvy to say the least, this kind of reception is not just expected; it’s practically welcomed. Ever the showman, he seemed to soak in the attention. In his own words after the game, he found it “actually appreciated,” and even went on to note the enthusiastic volume. Loud “boos” can sound a lot like enthusiastic cheers if you listen in the right direction.

As the former president recounted the game, his focus remained surprisingly sportsmanlike. He described the basketball playing as fantastic and acknowledged the talent on display. Perhaps in his retelling, there was a clever metaphor for his own political gameplay—well-fought and expertly played. Yet, in a typical Trumpian twist, even the game took a backseat to the spectacle of his presence in the stands. Somehow, the Knicks versus their opponent became a kind of undercard event, overshadowed by the buzz around the man who managed to make even an NBA game partly about him.

In all, whether one loves or despises him, it’s undeniable that Trump knows how to stay in the public eye. Even at a simple basketball game, he commands attention and orchestrates a show. It’s a skill, really, to be both the observer and the main event. For better or worse, when Trump is in the building, the building is never quite the same. As for those boos and cheers, perhaps the sounds aren’t as pivotal as the fact that he’s still the one driving the reaction. After all, when it comes to Trump, isn’t it the spectacle itself that’s the real game being played?
