Victor Davis Hanson Nails Trump’s Unstoppable Comeback in New Book

The political landscape within the Republican Party is shifting, and it’s largely due to an enigma quite unlike any other: Donald Trump. Despite being a former president, Trump has managed to remain at the forefront of the political stage, handling an unprecedented barrage of legal and political challenges. He is the first former president to face numerous criminal charges, have his residence searched by the FBI, and encounter efforts to bar him from ballots in multiple states. Yet, Trump has not only survived these challenges; he’s leveraged them, turning adversity into political capital. This raises a crucial question about the future of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement if Trump is no longer at its helm.

In contemplating this future, there’s a realization that the Republican Party, as it stood traditionally, may never return. The days of the more cautious and less confrontational politics, epitomized by figures like George Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney, seem to be fading. These politicians believed in slowing down the progressive agenda with subtlety and strategy. They accepted certain aspects of leftist dominance, acknowledging media bias, for example, but without aggressive confrontation or drastic changes. Trump, however, has fundamentally altered this approach.

Under Trump’s influence, there’s a bolder segment within the GOP willing to tackle these perceived biases head-on. Many within MAGA understand that institutions like NPR and PBS have long tilted left and believe they should be defunded. Trump supporters argue that longstanding issues, such as skyrocketing tuition costs at universities, demand immediate intervention, including imposing taxes on endowments and protecting constitutional rights on campuses.

Additionally, the debate on law enforcement and immigration forms a significant part of Trump’s legacy. While previous Republicans might have shied away from hardline approaches, Trumpists advocate for robust policing policies and stringent border security measures. Proposals to deport millions and drastically secure the borders are seen by some as necessary steps to protect the nation’s integrity. These ideas, once labeled as extreme, now represent an ideological shift within the party, showcasing the transformation sparked by Trump’s presidency.

This transformation raises a pivotal question about leadership and ideology within the party. Can the GOP sustain and grow the MAGA movement without Trump? Some of his supporters envision a continuation of the hardline stances he popularized. However, with or without Trump, the Republican Party has undeniably been reshaped. There’s now an expectation for bolder policies, more vocal resistance against progressive overreach, and a determined push to return to what many perceive as foundational American values.

In the end, this evolution signifies more than just Trump’s impact; it reflects a changing America. Whether one agrees or disagrees with Trump’s approach, his ability to navigate and thrive amidst chaos has undeniably left an indelible mark on the Republican Party. As the party grapples with its direction, one thing remains clear: it is unlikely to return to the old ways, and Trump’s influence will continue to shape its course for years to come.
