White House Fires Back at NJ for Non-Citizen Voter Registration

There’s a big stir in New Jersey, and it’s not election season buzz. New Jersey’s governor has taken the unusual step of acknowledging that non-citizens were wrongly registered to vote in their elections. The state reported that thousands of individuals who aren’t U.S. citizens somehow found themselves on the voter rolls, and one can only imagine the meetings happening behind the scenes where someone finally said, “Oops!” It’s like realizing your neighbor’s cat is living rent-free in your house—unexpected, to say the least.

The Attorney General’s office has indicated that allowing non-citizens to vote could lead to legal consequences, including prosecution and fines. This suggests that perhaps some election officials made monumental errors in judgment or oversight. It’s not too far-fetched to think heads could roll here, metaphorically speaking, for letting this oversight fester. Either way, this is not the kind of clerical error that goes unnoticed, especially in a climate where every vote counts and every legal vote is scrutinized to the last detail.

New Jersey’s action comes on the heels of a letter from the Secretary of Homeland Security to several states, including the Garden State, urging them to address this nagging problem of non-citizens on voter rolls. It’s like receiving a stern notice from a landlord to fix a leaky faucet, only in this case, that faucet might have been leaking on purpose. Those letters were meant to ensure states are serious about the issue, which some might say should have been their default position all along.

The governor suddenly voicing concern seems to align suspiciously well with this administration’s diligence, or perhaps urgency, in getting to the bottom of illegal voting. It’s like sheepishly admitting your dog was the one digging up the neighbor’s yard only after the neighborhood watch starts staking out with binoculars. The administration seems determined to make sure that the right to vote remains exclusively with those who are United States citizens, as it should be.

The drive to pass the Save America Act has never felt more justified. This legislation aims to lock down voting to only U.S. citizens, ensuring the integrity that seems to have slipped somehow. Yesterday, the House moved the proposal forward, hoping the Senate does the same so it can speed across the President’s desk by August. This moment in New Jersey shines a spotlight on the issue and reinforces what many Americans have been concerned about: the sanctity and security of their votes. It’s clear that citizens want reassurance that their votes are not diluted by those who have not yet earned the right to cast them.
