The current climate of political rhetoric is fast becoming a runaway train, particularly from the left. It seems there’s a never-ending avalanche of vitriol directed towards President Trump, and it almost feels like the media is egging it on. While conservatives have their critics, there’s a certain level of accountability on the right that’s not being matched on the left. Those on the right are well aware that they don’t have the mainstream media, Hollywood, or academia on their side, so they ensure their arguments are well-polished and fact-based. It’s interesting how a ‘shame culture’ keeps the conservative camp in check, whereas the left seems to operate on a different set of rules.
Some claim there’s an ongoing ‘MAGA civil war,’ but these tales are nothing more than hyperbole. Despite stories of discord within conservative ranks, there’s still a system in place that maintains some measure of order. Meanwhile, the left has evolved past even pretending to offer perfunctory apologies for their heated rhetoric. It has reached a point where some public figures just shrug their shoulders and dismiss any responsibility. The left wing’s open and unapologetic disdain for President Trump has become their brand, and it seems they’re ready to go down that rabbit hole no matter where it leads.
This unbridled rhetoric has tangible consequences, as showcased by recent events involving those who have targeted President Trump. Take, for example, the situation with Cole Allen, who, armed with words and a manifesto, echoed the same language and themes common in left-wing circles. It’s disconcerting when the extreme meets the mainstream, and we see similar language in Allen’s writings to that broadcast on cable news or echoed in Congress by the Democrats. This mainstreaming of extreme rhetoric puts an undue burden on law enforcement agencies tasked with separating genuine threats from mere noise.
By examining the manifestos of people who have attempted to breach the security around Trump, one can see a clear pattern reflecting an absorption of leftist conspiratorial discourse. Trump, despite varying opinions about him, holds the office of the president and deserves the protective measures that come with it. Even those who disagree with his politics must recognize the importance of impartial protection. By casting aside this basic tenet, the left inches uncomfortably close to chaos, and there’s an alarming lack of introspection within its ranks.
The assumption that the average person won’t be swayed by inflammatory rhetoric is a naive premise. There’s a substantial segment of the population that laps up these narratives, willing to act upon them. It’s a dangerous form of naivety to think that all people digest this media with a critical eye. When left-wing media continues its relentless supply of sensationalist rhetoric, it feeds into an ecosystem that fosters radical action, not just opinion. Our democracy demands better, and it’s about time all sides remembered the value of discourse over diatribe.
